About the producer

Elegance, finesse and refinement are words that come to mind to describe this wine that is produced at a property in the east of Pomerol, near Saint Emilion. Château la Conseillante's vineyard is one of the oldest on Pomerol's plateau, taking its name from Catherine Conseillan, who owned the château in the 18th century. Since 1871 it has belonged to the Nicolas family, who have upheld tradition with the passing generations and maintained the wine at a very high level of quality.

The vineyard's 12 hectares consist of two sections with completely different characteristics, which correspond perfectly to the two grape varieties that are used to make the wine: to the north, for the Merlot vines, grey clay lies on a subsoil of red clay, indicating a rich iron content, a characteristic of Petrus' terroir. For the plots to the south of the property, near the Saint Emilion appellation, there is a sandy-gravel subsoil, particularly suited to Cabernet Franc, a variety that does very well at neighbouring Cheval Blanc. Plot by plot management is respected at every stage of the vinification process, under the supervision of the talented Jean-Michel Laporte. The wines are then aged for nearly two years in barrels, 60 to 100% renewed each year, depending on the vintage.

About the wine

A classified Pomerol red wine, Château La Conseillante is produced from the appellation’s classic grape varieties, predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Franc. The vines are tended by hand before plot-by-plot vinification takes place in concrete vats. Every stage of production is designed to respect the specific identity of each parcel. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, with 80% new wood. When it comes to blending, a very strict selection process is carried out to guarantee a wine of impeccable precision and unrivalled quality.
Château La Conseillante produces very smooth, silky wines. Less powerful than Petrus, Trotonoy or Certan de May, they are more supple and mature more quickly. Sometime described as "Bordeaux Burgundy" on account of its finesse, this cuvée reveals captivating notes of candied plum and black raspberry, layered with hints of truffle, mocha, and spice. On the palate, it unfolds in a luxuriously velvety texture. With cellaring, La Conseillante develops enchanting aromas of violet, liquorice, and jammy red fruits. This delicate violet fragrance, so emblematic of the château’s wine, gave its colour to the capsule of La Conseillante bottles in 1871, named according to the wishes of Catherine Conseillan, a prominent woman who commissioned the château in the 18th century.
