Founded in the late 1960s by Mackinlay, a subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle Breweries, the distillery was bought by Invergordon Distillers in 1985, Campbell Distillers in 1989 and then Billy Walker in 2017. It was under the latter that the distillery began releasing its own bottlings of single malts, with previous owners preferring to focus on blends. In addition to the new core range composed of a 10 Year Old Cask Strength, a 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old and 18 Year Old, the distillery also regularly bottles limited editions and single casks.

A Glenallachie 2007 The Sherry bottled in 2019 by independent bottler Signatory Vintage for La Maison du Whisky. This is an exclusive edition for the Whisky.fr website limited to 439 bottles. It was released at the same time as Ledaig 2011 The Smoky.
