Information
Based in the Jura, Thomas Popy cultivates his vineyard with humility, far from the spotlight and social media, yet with a masterful touch and a profound respect for the living. His two hectares of vines stretch across magnificent terroirs between Montigny-lès-Arsures, Arbois, Pupillin and Mesnay, at the heart of Jura’s finest crus. Here, grapes from parcels tended with great care and patience yield rare and sought-after wines produced in minute quantities in an equally discreet cellar, reflecting the character of their maker.
Before striking out on his own, Thomas learned from iconic winemakers who shaped France’s natural wine landscape: Pierre Overnoy, a legendary figure of Arbois; Michel Guignier, a staunch defender of natural Beaujolais; and the late Julie Balagny, who was based on the heights of Fleurie. From these masters, he inherited a free, instinctive winemaking approach, without inputs or sulphites, with deep respect for the grape and the natural rhythm of fermentation. The winemaker champions slowness, trust in time, and careful listening to the material to craft sensitive, vibrant wines deeply rooted in their terroir.
His cuvées, often fleeting and highly sought-after, stand out for their finesse, freshness, and ability to express Jura with no exaggeration or folklore. Through his bottles, Thomas Popy offers a sincere, almost meditative experience that invites a slowing of pace and a reconnection to a rustic truth.
These natural wines, best opened ahead of drinking, pair exquisitely with simple, flavourful regional cuisine. They embody a philosophy more than a product, making their maker one of the Jura’s most singular and promising artisans.
