Information
Vineyard owner René Barbier is originally from the Vaucluse and learned his craft in Burgundy and Bordeaux (including Petrus). He set up his own domaine, le Clos Mogador, at Gratallops in 1989. He has clearly been influential in raising the profile of this region which now boasts some of the most prestigious vineyards in Spain. At the same time, he has propelled his own domaine into the country’s major league.
These century-old Grenache vines flourish in Catalonia, at the heart of the Spanish winegrowing landscape. They thrive on nutrient-rich clay-limestone soils that are organically and biodynamic farmed. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and then delicately sorted to retain only the finest berries. Minimum intervention winemaking culminates in ageing in French oak barrels for around 15 months before the wine is bottled. The ruby-red colour offers an expressive bouquet of intense raspberry and blackcurrant aromas, combined with notes of citrus fruit and a hint of spice. Subtle floral flavours of rose and orange blossom emerge on a well-structured palate, balanced by a fine minerality that leads to a fresh finish. This wine offers great ageing potential.
