Information
Alexis Seguin owned a small vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, where he was already grafting vines. During the terrible phylloxera crisis that decimated so many Burgundy vineyards, Alexis was one of the first in his region to combat the disease by grafting with American wood, a feat that won him numerous awards in the late 1980s. His three children, Aristide, Blanche and Hippolyte, inherited the estate in the 1920s. Hippolyte inherited the house and half an hectare of vines. In 1950, Pierre, Hippolyte’s son, expanded the family business considerably, acquiring new plots before building a new, more modern winery in 1960. Over the years, successive winemakers have continued to develop the estate. Jérôme Seguin has been cultivating the estate’s six hectares of vines since 2006. The estate is so successful and its wines so sought-after that over 70% of its production is exported.
The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Craipillot vines are planted on a clay and limestone terroir. The wine is named after this chalky, calcareous soil, responsible for its finesse and elegance. The harvests are meticulously conducted by hand to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Once harvested, the grapes undergo a cold maceration process to extract maximum colour and aromas. Fermentation is started by native yeasts, guaranteeing an authentic expression of the terroir. The wine is matured in French oak casks for 12 to 18 months, with a proportion of new wood, which imparts subtle woody notes and a good tannic structure.
This process ensures the nectar develops complex aromas of red fruit like cherry and raspberry, along with hints of spice and undergrowth. On the palate, the Gevrey-Chambertin Craipillot is supple and well balanced, with delicate tannins and good length. It is the perfect companion for red meats, game and matured cheeses.
