Information
Bruno Giacosa, who passed away in January 2018, was an iconic Italian winemaker, notably in the Barolo and Barbaresco appellations. His career began very early at the age of 13, when he helped his parents in the family wine business. He also learned very young about grape selection during harvesting. This allowed him to establish a reputation as an excellent négociant. Before acquiring his own domaine (Azienda Agricola Falletto), he vinified grapes from prestigious crus. On the domaine, red wines are macerated in thermoregulated stainless steel vats. White wines are aged in stainless steel and Barberas and Nebbiolos are aged in large oak barrels. Ageing lasts between 1 and 3 years and the wines are then stored in bottles for a while prior to sale.
Set in the heart of Barolo in Piedmont, north-west Italy, these Nebbiolo vines come from the Falletto cru in the village of Serralunga d’Alba. Averaging 29 to 33 years, they benefit from a south-west-facing exposure. Harvested in mid-October, the grapes undergo fermentation and maceration in vat for 25 days, followed by full malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 32 months in large French oak casks, before a further 6 months in bottle
In the glass, the wine shows an intense garnet-red hue with orange glints typical of evolution. The nose reveals complex aromas of ripe red fruit, layered with notes of dried rose, black truffle, leather and spice. On the palate, a refined attack introduces a firm tannic structure, finely balanced by well-integrated acidity, leading to a long, persistent finish.
