Vintage description 1990 Burgundy

An outstanding vintage. Despite fairly decent yields, the Pinot produced exceptionally good red wines. You would need to go quite far back in history to find such a monumental and majestic wine. They are all top-quality, remarkably well-balanced wines. Deep-purple, they have a lovely complex aroma dominated by small black fruit. They are very ample and long on the palate with a surprising amount of concentration that is enhanced by a good structure and body. The potential of these wines makes them an excellent choice for cellaring. The Chardonnay had a relatively abundant harvest and had some remarkable results at Chablis where the grapes were ripened to perfection. Elsewhere, ripening was more complicated but the white wines were generally satisfactory. They have just the right amount of mellowness, which is enhanced by an acidity that imparts a nice crisp finish and also ensures a good cellaring.
