This is a gourmet rosé which is aged at length in wooden barrels. It has a generous character and a wonderful fullness on the palate. A fine piece of work by a small domain that uses environmentally-friendly methods.

More info

Massa Vecchia is nestled on the slopes of the Metallifere hill in Tuscany, just north of Maremma. Despite being small in size, it is a very sought-after winery around the world due to its meticulous work in the vineyards and cellars. It produces this rosé using black Malvasia grapes and Merlot, both from vines that are cared for meticulously. Patrizia Bartolini, who runs the estate, is committed to working in harmony with nature, and so only uses fertilisers, copper and sulphur. Chemical products, including herbicides and pesticides, as well as invasive technologies, are banned from the winery.
This rosé wine is vinified as a white wine, with the grapes being macerated for 12 hours with the skin on before being aged for 18 months in oak and chestnut barrels. The wines are then left to mature for a further six months in bottles on site. This wine is generous, with a certain roundness and a wonderful fruity and spicy finish reminiscnet of its ageing. It would pair best with red meats, grilled tomatoes, or aubergine dishes.

About the Producer Massa Vecchia

Massa Vecchia is located to the north of Maremma in Tuscany on the slopes of the Metallifere hill. The domain spans 6 hectares: 3.6 of vines, 1.5 of olives trees and 0.8 cereals. Every year, the domain produces 15,000 bottles of wine. It was founded by Fabrizio Niccolaini and his wife Patrizia Bartolini in 1985. Their daughter Patrizia, along with business partners Daniel and Ines Wattenhofer, Thoams Frischknecht and Rocco Delli Colli. Respecting nature is at the heart of the work in the domain. Man is thus a mere guardian of natural processes, intervening very little if at all.
