The Swartland wine region consists mainly of sandy-clay and schist soils, which are particularly well-suited to growing characterful grape varieties such as Grenache. The Grenache grapes are grown on high ground, benefiting from optimum exposure and a cool sea breeze. The fruit is harvested by hand when fully ripe, with a meticulous selection of bunches to ensure that only the best fruit is kept. After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and then fermented in open vats with temperature control to avoid over-extraction. Fermentation takes place thanks to the naturally present yeasts. The wine is then matured in oak barrels of various sizes, including tuns, to limit the influence of wood and allow the fruity, spicy aromas of the Grenache to show through. The wine displays a deep, brilliant ruby colour. The nose is intense and expressive, marked by aromas of fresh red fruit, along with spiced notes of black pepper, garrigue and rosemary. On the palate, this wine is full and generous, with a fine, silky tannic structure.
