Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Domaine René Engel - Domaine Eugénie 2018

The wine

A prestigious Côte de Nuits estate, Domaine d'Eugénie has been owned by François Pinault since 2006. Here he crafts a wine from the famous Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru. The Chardonnay vines that make up this vineyard flourish at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level while facing south, thus enjoying the ideal amount of sunshine for ripening. All of this takes place within a small 0.04 hectare parcel. Yields are mastered to allow the grapes to express the quintessence of their terroir.
On tasting, this wine has good cellaring potential and unveils a pale yellow colour which, upon maturation, turns into gold. The fragrance is rich and complex and ageing in wood complements the notes of white fruit and flowers with those of butter, dried fruit (almond, hazelnut), vanilla and bakery aromas. A wonderful acidity enlivens the whole bottle, bringing persistence and vigour.

About the Producer Domaine d'Eugénie (René Engel)

The seven hectares of the Engel domain cover some of the most prestigious Côte de Nuits appellations: Clos Vougeot, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux and Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru. Philippe Engel took over from his father in 1981, and in 1982 he undertook drastic measures within the domain which was then rated among the best in Vosne-Romanée, but sadly, he died of an accidental death in 2004. The Engel domain was taken over by François Pinault in 2006, and today the Château Latour team (owned by the François Pinault group), under the guidance of Frédéric Engerer, is responsible for its development. The yields are rigorously controlled. The domain produces full-bodied and particularly racy wines, with complex aromas; their balance means that they can be cellared for a long time. René Engel, professor of oenology for 35 years at Dijon University, was an important pre-war figure for Burgundy winemaking. He was one of the founders of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and not only promoted his own wines remarkably well, but also the whole of the Côte d'Or in general, until his retirement in 1949.
