Lot presentation

Hermitage Ermitage de l'Orée Chapoutier 2002

The wine

It was in the 18th century that the name of Ermitage appeared in memory of a knight who, when returning from the crusades (13th century) and tired of fighting, lived as a hermit on a hill given by Anne de Castille, Queen of Spain. He planted a vineyard there. The hermitage blanc of L'Orée is made from old vines (on average, 80 years old) with very low yield, ensuring quality production. The barrel ageing lasts just under a year, on lees with regular stirring. This exceptional white wine develops complex and subtle aromas of quince, walnut, honey and acacia with a note of linden. The creaminess of the attack gives way to a fresh and impressive finish.

About the Producer Chapoutier

Maison Chapoutier is without doubt one of the most prestigious names in the Rhône producing some of the finest Hermitage. The domain converted its 300 hectares of vines to biodynamic viticulture, making it the largest vineyard to adopt this method of cultivation. It has held certification since 1999. Chapoutier is often one of the last estates to harvest its grapes so that they are at optimal ripeness. The Chapoutier savoir faire has spread to other vineyards in other winemaking regions: Provence, Beaujolais, Roussillon, Champagne, Alsace, Portugal but also South Australia.
This family's winemaking journey started way back in 1806 but 1879 was a turning point when Polydor Chapoutier bought a few hectares of vines and started a negociant business. Seven generations have succeeded him, and Michel Chapoutier is currently at the helm, supported by his children Mathilde and Maxime. Together, they continue the family's story, all while highlighting Rhône's great terroirs.
