Why choose this wine?
The second wine of Château Brane-Cantenac, Baron de Brane is appreciated for the nobility and finesse of its tannins, offering an accessible and generous expression of the Margaux style. Named in tribute to Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane, the wine stands out for its freshness, aromatic intensity and early balance.
More infoBaron de Brane is made from younger vines, averaging around 25 years, planted on deep gravelly soils with clay on the third terrace of the Brane plateau, a terroir known for promoting even ripening and finely textured tannins. Vinification takes place in wooden and stainless-steel vats, followed by 12 months of ageing in barrel, including 30% new oak. Crafted according to the same exacting principles as the first wine with rigorous lot selection and maturation designed to preserve fruit purity and structural balance. This wine offers a highly expressive nose revealing aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and red fruits, alongside floral notes and, at times, subtle hints of sweet spice and violet, hallmarks of Margaux. The palate is broad, fleshy and generous, with refined tannins. The overall impression is harmonious and inviting, supported by freshness and a well-balanced structure that allows for earlier enjoyment while retaining excellent ageing potential.
A firm and racy second wine with dried lemon, crushed stone, oyster shell and black currant aromas. It's medium-bodied with firm and linear tannins and a bright finish. James Suckling
59% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc
About the Producer Château Brane-Cantenac
★ Partner ProducerThe château was ranked a Deuxième Grand Cru in 1855, a distinction that firmly established Brane-Cantenac among Bordeaux’s leading wines. It is renowned for its remarkable ageing potential and consistent quality.
The Lurton family bought this prestigious property in 1925, and with the passing generations has maintained the delicate, complex, aromatic style for which Brane-Cantenac is known. Now under the direction of Henri Lurton, the property continues to pursue an exacting vision rooted in meticulous plot-by-plot management and a deep understanding of its soils. Harvesting is conducted with precision, and vinification is carefully controlled, supported by modern technologies (optical sorting and R’Pulse system), while ageing is carried out with equal care in French oak barrels. A thorough study of the gravel soils led to reshaping the vineyard, identifying distinct sectors aligned with the ancient terraces formed over thousands of years. This precise mapping allows vineyard practices and vinification to be tailored to each soil type, clearly revealing the different expressions of the Margaux terroir. Each parcel is vinified separately to express its singular character with the greatest accuracy.
