Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes Prieuré Roch 2017
The wine
This very prestigious domaine is managed by the co-proprietor and manager of the mythical Domaine la Romanée-Conti. It is entirely devoted to its terroir, taking the "natural" approach to its very limits. As a result, the wines are very refined and closely reflect their respective climats.
This Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes is a selection of the oldest vines in Clos des Corvées, a 5.2-hectare parcel which was divided up in the Middle Ages and is one of the top monopoles in the region. The nose reveals a bouquet of ripe cherries and the palate has a spicy, cinnamon theme, suggesting the festive season, and well-blended mouthwatering tannins. This superb classic cuvée is simply delicious.
Domaine Prieuré Roch extends over 14 hectares along the Côte de Nuits, spanning around a dozen climats. It was led by Henry-Frédéric Roch, sadly dead in November 2018, grandson of Henry Leroy, founder of Maison Leroy and co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti alongside Aubert de Villaine. Yannick Champ, who joined the estate in 2002, became co-director in 2010.
The vineyard holdings include some of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted sites: Nuits-Saint-Georges premier crus, Clos Goillotte, Les Hautes-Maizières and Les Suchots in Vosne-Romanée, as well as grand crus including Clos de Vougeot and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. In the Côte de Beaune, the estate also has vines in Ladoix and Savigny-lès-Beaune. The estate owns three monopole vineyards: Clos des Corvées (Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru), Clos des Varoilles (Gevrey-Chambertin premier cru) and Clos Goillotte (Vosne-Romanée).
Viticulture follows organic principles with deliberately low yields. In the winery, fermentations are natural, carried out with whole bunches and without added sulphur. The resulting wines combine striking finesse and deliver a remarkable faithful expression of their respective climats. Today, they are widely regarded among Burgundy’s finest wines.
