Sancerre Empreinte Fouassier (Domaine) 2020

The wine

Empreinte hails from the Sancerre appellation in the heart of the Loire Valley. The region enjoys a moderate continental climate and a patchwork of soils dominated by flint, white limestone pebbles known as caillottes and clay-limestone. These diverse terroirs are fundamental to Sancerre’s identity, giving the wines their hallmark minerality, freshness and aromatic complexity. Empreinte is produced from vines farmed biodinamically. Harvested by hand, the grapes are vinified naturally with a low-intervention approach before the wine is aged on fine lees to enhance both texture and complexity.
The deep, brilliant hue gives way to aromas of blackberry and cherry, complemented by delicate notes of violet and liquorice. The palate is beautifully structured and vibrant, with fine tannins leading to a long, spicy, mineral finish.

Domaine Fouassier is a family-run property on the slopes of the Piton de Sancerre. The Fouassiers are one of the oldest winemaking families in the appellation, going back several generations. The vineyard boasts almost 56 hectares, planted with 80% Sauvignon and 20% Pinot Noir, and has been cultivated on biodynamic principles since the early 2000s. The wide range of whites make for a wonderful palette of wines - some light and fruity and others fleshy or mineral. The reds, as good Pinot Noirs, are elegant and distinguished.
