Vosne-Romanée Machard de Gramont 2023

The wine

Vosne-Romanée enjoys an almost mythical status, celebrated for the finesse and depth of its wines. This reputation stems largely from the complexity of its terroirs, low yields, and a rich wine-growing history dating back to Gallo-Roman times, later shaped and preserved by the monks of Saint-Vivant in the Middle Ages. The terroir is located on well-drained marl and clay-limestone soils over mineral-rich Jurassic bedrock. This type of soil produces wines that marry power with elegance, showcasing vibrant fruit expression and refined, noble tannins. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted with care, then vatted in partially destemmed bunches. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing in 30% new oak barrels for 12 months without fining or filtration.
The glass shows a deep and bright ruby-red colour. The nose opens with aromas of black cherries, violet, sweet spices and undergrowth. The palate is direct and well-defined, enhanced by velvety tannins, with great finesse leading to a long, salty finish.
