Vin de France Mazière Carignan Fabrice Monnin 2019
The wine
Corbières, nestled between the Mediterranean and the foothills of the Pyrenees, was long associated with high-volume wine production before undergoing a profound shift towards quality in the early 2000s. The Mazière locality lies on clay-limestone terraces strewn with rounded pebbles, in an area swept by both the Cers and maritime winds. Here, Carignan, a grape variety renowned for its rustic character, gains remarkable finesse thanks to these well-drained, mineral-rich soils. The manual harvests take place at optimum ripeness, with the grapes carefully collected in small crates. Following a 30-day maceration in concrete vats, fermentation begins spontaneously with native yeasts. The wine is then aged for 12 months in 30-hectolitre seasoned oak foudres (large tuns).
The wine shows a beautiful deep garnet-red hue. The nose is both intense and vibrant, revealing aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant and stewed plum, enriched by notes of garrigue and smoke. The palate opens with a supple yet lively first sip, combining juicy concentration with fine, well-integrated tannins.
