This single malt, from Saitama’s renowned Chichibu distillery, has been aged in a koshu ex-Chardonnay wine cask. This maturation in a cask used for wine provides a unique dimension, creating a must-have for fans of the Chichibu distillery and Japanese whisky lovers in general.
Distilled in 2015, and bottled in 2022 at 62.3%, it offers a generous and contrasting character, with notes of salt, sweet spices and iodine, reminiscent of the sea coast.
On the nose, the richness and concentration are dazzling. It first unveils aromas of iris butter, followed by notes of lemon zest, dried walnuts, subtle hints of curry and Mirabelle plum. Floral hints of broom flowers and nougat emerge with aeration, enriching the already complex aromatic palette. On the palate, it is remarkably full-bodied and perfectly balanced. Vanilla, pineapple and cedar all come together in perfect harmony. The mid-palate delivers a symphony of candied pear and banana flavours, enhanced by hints of salt, lemon and chocolate. The long, velvety finish adds a sensation of freshness provided by coconut milk and acacia honey. Lingering aromas of preserved lemon, walnut and curry round off this sensory experience, reflecting the exceptional quality of the noble oak used for the ageing.

Independent & family-ownedIt was in 2007 that Ichiro Akuto, grandson of the founder of the Hanyu distillery, built a new distillery in the north-west of Tokyo, in Saitama Prefecture. Named Chichibu after the city where its located, it brought to a close several decades marked by the closure of numerous production sites, and enabled Ichiro Akuto to renew his family's history of expertise. Despite its small size (production capacity of 80,000 LPA/yr), Chichibu quickly drew attention and became highly sought-after. It was under the name “New Born” that Ichiro sold exclusively his malt for three years. In 2011, the first edition of a small batch Chichibu named The First was released (7,400 bottles). It was immediately welcomed by distributors and the world's whisky enthusiasts, putting Chichibu on the fast-track to becoming a distillery with strong potential as a collectible. Since then, Ichiro has released numerous single casks to respond to consumer demand, increasing the distillery's appeal among collectors. And its next goal? To produce a whisky whose origins is completely Japanese, using local malt and peat.
