A Barolo with very appealing ageing potential, from a prestigious appellation.
More infoThis cuvée is a single varietal made from Nebbiolo grapes cultivated on limestone soils 330m above sea level. The Rionda parcel is considered to be one of the finest grands crus in the Serralunga vineyards. The wine is vinified in a temperature-regulated vat for about twenty days, then aged for a year in a large French oak casks. Over time, it develops fragrant Morello cherry, herb and sometimes even dried flower aromas. Its pleasing tannic structure and the tartness which is a characteristic of this grape variety make it a safe bet for cellaring.
About the Producer Luigi Pira
★ Partner ProducerThe estate was established in 1950 by Luigi Pira. It is located in Serralunga d'Alba, in the heart of the Langhe region near Barolo and in the vicinity of other prestigious producers such as Angelo Gaja’s vineyard. It is without a shadow of a doubt a rising star among the Piedmont vineyards. The Azienda spans some 12 hectares: 6 hectares in DOCG Barolo (three vineyards in Marenca, Margheria, Vignarionda), 2 hectares in DOC Barbera d’Alba, 2.5 hectares in DOC Dolcetto d’Alba, 1.5 hectare in DOC Langhe Nebbiolo. Cultivated without chemicals, the vines produce powerful structured wines which are richly complex. The wines strike a fine balance between tradition and modernity.
Supported by his two brothers, his wife and his daughters, Gianpaolo Pira brings out the very best in Nebbiolo, steadily emerging from the shadow of some of Barolo's most celebrated names. For lovers of great Italian wines, this represents a wonderful opportunity, with prices that remain remarkably accessible. A benchmark estate, producing wines that can evolve beautifully for decades.
