The wine

A Knockando 20 year old distilled in 1974 and bottled in 1995 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, making it the third oldest university in Scotland the fifth oldest in the English-speaking world. It is therefore one of the “ancient universities”, all founded before the 17th century. The university today is the result of a merger in 1860 between King’’s College, effectively founded in Old Aberdeen in 1495 by William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen and Chancellor of Scotland, and Marischal College, founded in 1593 by George Keith, the fifth Earl Marischal of Scotland. Another version of this bottling also exists in a square blue bottle.

Its single malt perfectly embodies the Auld Alliance between France and Scotland, even adopting certain practices from the world of wine and cognac, such as the “Extra Old” appellation and vintage. It is therefore possible to trace the development of Knockando's style, characterized by bourbon cask maturation, across the decades by focusing on four pivotal ages, 12, 15, 18 and 21, all bearing a vintage.
