Aglianico
According to some sources, Aglianico is an extremely ancient grape variety, said to have been used in Ancient Greece as far back as 600 BC. However, this theory is increasingly disputed. Other sources suggest that the grape variety first appeared in the 16th century in Italy, one of the only countries in the world where it is planted, along with Australia where it was imported by Italian migrants. It is particularly present in the regions of Basilicata and Campania but is also found in Puglia and Molise. It is used in the appellations of Aglianico del Taburno, Biferno, Campi Flegrei, Castel del Monte, Aglianico del Vulture and Taurasi DOCG. The latter two of these appellations are those for which it is best known. On their volcanic soils, Aglianico produces concentrated and wonderfully expressive red wines, developing aromas of red and black fruit, and spiced notes, with high acidity and a marked tannic structure, due in particular to its thick skin. This acidity and tannic character have earned it the honour of being nicknamed the “Barolo of the south”.
