grenache

Known as Garnacha in its native Spain, Grenache originated in the northern Spanish region of Aragon. From there, it spread throughout the Mediterranean, giving rise to colour mutations including Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris. Today, Grenache is a defining grape variety of southern France. The variety can produce high-alcohol wines and is therefore frequently blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre, which can bring additional structure and complexity. Grenache is also one of the 13 grape varieties permitted in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where it contributes to sumptuous, age-worthy wines, and is also grown in Rioja, South Africa and California.

Red Grenache wines are rich, warming and full-bodied, while rosés are light and bursting with freshness. Aromas can be intense, with notes of red fruit such as strawberry, cherry and raspberry, alongside liquorice and white pepper. Grenache is grown by many leading producers, including Château Rayas, Château de Beaucastel (Famille Perrin), Domaine Peyre Rose, Henri Bonneau & Fils, Clos du Mont-Olivet, Torbreck, The Sadie Family, Viñedos de Alcohuaz, Elisabetta Foradori, Álvaro Palacios and Cayuse.
