Information
Located in Vinzelles, the Domaine La Soufrandière was bought by Jules Bret in 1947. The vineyard covers 4.55 hectares in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation with Les Quarts and Les Longeays climats, to which 1.6 hectares of the Clos du Grand-Père in Mâcon-Vinzelles was added in 2005. The domaine, certified in organic farming and biodynamics, is now managed by the Bret brothers: Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume. They have also been trading since 2001 under the name of the Bret Brothers.
Once more, the Bret Brothers have crafted a stunning cuvée, sourced from old vines rooted at the foot of the iconic Roche de Vergisson. The vines thrive on two contrasting parcels, one north-facing with limestone-rich soils, the other east-facing on sandstone, both producing grapes of impeccable balance. Hand-harvested, like all other grapes on the estate, pressed in whole bunches and fermented with native yeasts, the wine is left for 11 months in seasoned oak small barrels. This wine is sulphite-free until bottling, at which point just a mere 20 mg/L is added, hence the cuvée’s apt name: Zen. The result is a rich white, combining striking minerality with excellent tension.
