About the producer

Vines have been growing at Schloss Johannisberg since 1200 and Riesling vines have called it their home since the start of the 18th century. Today, the property is made up of 50 hectares that face due south. Riesling thrives here on steep, 45° slopes at an altitude of 182 metres.
Schloss Johannisberg even has its own oak forest (300 hectares), and the wines are matured in barrels made from this local wood, bringing both texture and structure to the final cuvées. Beneath the estate lies a true treasure in the form of an underground cellar housing some 25,000 bottles spanning almost three centuries?–?the oldest dating back to 1748!
Now owned by the Oetker family, the estate has been managed by Christian Witte since 2005. The winery has a unique architectural layout, with cellars dedicated to fermentation and ageing, where wines mature in foudres (large capacity oak tuns) and vats. Visitors are welcome to explore the château or sample its magic during a tasting session.

About the wine

The Riesling vines grow on soils predominantly consisting of silt and a small amount of iron, which is responsible for the characteristic reddish colour. Once in the winery the grapes undergo traditional, low-intervention vinification. The fruit ferments in 1200-litre oak casks for six weeks. The cuvée has the particularity of being aged on fine lees for several months before being bottled. The rich, lemon-yellow colour reveals a complex, invigorating bouquet, combining aromas of preserved lime, pear and orange with subtle hints of quince. In the mouth, plum and Mirabelle plum aromas balance perfectly with fresh citrus and spicy notes, sublimated by a creamy character and a superb mineral structure. The deliciously long, fresh finish promises a breathtaking tasting experience. This 100% Riesling promises several good years of cellaring.
