Information
If you are a South African wine lover, you are in the right place! Discover this single-varietal Syrah from the Iron Kasteelsig site near the village of Malmesbury. The vines are rooted in iron-rich soils with a distinctive reddish colour. The surface layers contain gravel and clay, ensuring excellent drainage. Rigorous pruning promotes concentration and density in the fruit. The vineyard is farmed according to environmentally respectful principles, as organically as possible. The grapes are harvested manually, with yields averaging 22 hectolitres per hectare.
In the winery, the grapes are foot-trodden in open 500-litre casks. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur spontaneously with native yeasts, and maceration lasts close to four weeks. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques, including 50% new wood, for around 12 months, followed by a further ten months in 2,000-litre foudres. To finish, this nectar rests for an additional ten months in bottle before release.
