Information
Located in the north of the Abruzzo region, Emidio Pepe’s domaine has been producing some of the finest wines in the region since the 1960s. Emidio Pepe has carved out his success story single-handedly from a one-hectare parcel in 1964. Today, his daughter and granddaughter work the domaine, which has now expanded to 15 hectares. He vinifies in a neutral concrete vat and presses his grapes by hand and foot, like his predecessors. Applying principles adopted from biodynamic management, Emidio Pepe produces characteristic, distinguished, elegant wines reflecting the region’s particularly interesting terroir.
The Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo appellation originates in Italy’s Abruzzo region, on the Adriatic coast. It is home to a distinctive style of deeply coloured rosé made from Montepulciano, whose richly pigmented skins give the wine its characteristic deep cherry hue Located around the village of Torano Nuovo, the vines grow at an altitude of around 500 metres on limestone and sandy clay soils, where slow, even ripening brings both freshness and finesse. The Montepulciano grapes are harvested and destemmed entirely by hand before being vinified with native yeasts. Fermentation takes place without temperature control. The wine is matured in concrete tanks, without oak, to preserve the purity of the fruit. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The ruby-red hue is lifted by raspberry glints. The nose reveals aromas of morello cherry, pomegranate, fresh rose and a subtle mineral note. Broad and juicy on the palate, it shows vibrant freshness and silky tannins, leading to a delicious, mouth-watering finish.
