Information
Lucien Le Moine is a haute-couture trader/farmer maison created by Mounir Saouma and Rotem Brakin, a Lebanese couple. After the husband spent some time in a monastery and a first attempt at the art of making wine, then embarked on enology studies, he created his structure in 1999 to offer wine from the finest terroirs. The name of the maison comes from the nickname that his friends gave him as a result of his education in the Cistercian cloister: "Le Moine", the Monk. Lucien was the name given to him by the monks. Today, he produces 38 different crus, ranging from village wines to grand crus. The vinification and élevage are very precise and well done, as delicately and naturally as possible. A must-see.
The Chapelle-Chambertin appellation lies just south of the famed Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin. Its terroir is defined by shallow brown limestone soils interwoven with fine clays and marls. This composition ensures both excellent water retention and natural drainage, allowing for slow, even ripening of the grapes and resulting in wines of aromatic complexity and refined tannic structure. At Lucien Le Moine, each wine is crafted with an almost artistic precision: the grapes are harvested by hand and sorted berry by berry. Fermentation takes place in open vats with native yeasts, followed by extended ageing on the lees in exclusively new Burgundian oak barrels, without racking or filtration.
The wine displays a vibrant ruby-red hue. The nose reveals aromas of blackcurrant, wild raspberry, peony and sweet spices. The broad and velvety palate reveals fine, silky tannins, with a remarkable balance between power and delicacy.
