Information
In 1985 the Clair-Daü domain was split up after 76 years of winemaking (it was founded in 1919 by Marsannay). Over the years, Joseph Clair and Marguerite Daü have built up the domain's reputation. The incessant family quarrels, that had originally been the making of the house, eventually became too much and the domain was sold to the Maison Louis Jadot in 1985. Bruno Clair, Joseph's grandson, successfully pursued the ancient family tradition by adding his parent's and sibling's parcels to his own (Clos de Bèze, Cazetiers, Clos St-Jacques, Vosne-Romanée, Clos du Fonteny and Chambolle-Musigny). Today he is at the head of a 23-hectare domain, which has several grand crus parcels at Gevrey. The few remaining bottles of the domain benefit now from a true cult among lovers of great Burgundy wines.
Gevrey-Chambertin, at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, is one of Burgundy’s most celebrated villages when it comes to red wines. Among its standout climats is the Premier Cru Les Cazetiers, widely regarded as one of the appellation’s most distinguished sites. Set on a well-exposed east-facing slope just above Clos Saint-Jacques, Les Cazetiers enjoys an exceptional position. Its marl-limestone soils, strewn with stony scree and a healthy proportion of clay, provide both structure and depth. Manual harvests are followed by meticulous sorting to retain only the finest bunches. Fermentation takes place in open vats with native yeasts and gentle manual punch-downs, extracting colour, tannins and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak casks, with 25% new wood.
The wine displays an intense ruby hue with garnet glints. The nose is intense, marked by ripe black fruit, cherry, violet and fine spice, framed by a discreet touch of oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied, fleshy and firmly structured, carried by elegant, well-shaped tannins that lead into a poised, mineral finish.
