Information
A figurehead for Patrimonio, and one of the most charismatic Corsican winegrowers, Antoine Arena produces wines of extraordinary precision. He has managed the property since 1980 (which originally only consisted of three hectares of vines) and was joined by his sons Jean-Baptiste and Antoine-Marie in 2004. The vineyard now covers 11 hectares, with red (Nielluccio) and white grapes (Vermentino, Bianco Gentile and Muscat à Petits Grains for the sweet wines). No chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used; and in the winery, the most natural techniques possible are employed. The Arena''s philosophy, besides the careful observation and ploughing of the soil, is to bring out the best in their terroir; to accomplish this, a plot by plot approach is taken. The vineyard is managed according to biodynamic principles and has AB organic certification.
The village of Monthélie, nestled between Volnay and Meursault, is known for producing red wines of remarkable finesse and elegance. The Pinot Noir vines rise on well-exposed south-east-facing slopes between 230 and 370 metres in altitude. The soils are composed mainly of clay mixed with marly limestone. Manual harvests are followed by meticulous sorting of the fruit. Fermentation takes place in open vats with native yeasts, and the wine is then aged following traditional in oak casks for around 12 months
In the glass, the wine shows a bright, intense ruby hue. The nose reveals black cherry, raspberry and violet, lifted by spice and subtle oak. On the palate, a supple attack opens onto fine, well-integrated tannins and savoury notes of spice and flowers, leading into a fruit-driven, persistent finish.
