Nel corso degli anni, Macallan è riuscita ad affermarsi come una delle più importanti e prestigiose distillerie scozzesi, il tutto grazie a una costante ricerca per la qualità delle proprie materie prime e a un’estrema precisione nei metodi di produzione. Il risultato? Dei distillati d’eccezione, tra i più ambiti e apprezzati al mondo.

Macallan sta al single malt scozzese come Petrus sta ai Grand Cru francesi, in sintesi: un monumento! Nessuna distilleria ha, fino a oggi, registrato per una sola edizione denominata The Macallan 60 anni 1926 Dillon, un tale prezzo a un'asta: 1.2 milioni di sterline nel 2018. Macallan deve la sua fama all'eccellenza della sua produzione, all'invecchiamento in botti di sherry e alla capacità commerciale dei suoi proprietari che, dall'inizio del XX secolo partirono alla conquista di molti mercati, ma anche per la chiara visione che fin d'allora avevano di questa distilleria e del suo single malt, considerati al pari di uno château e di un Grand Cru. Così, assistito fino alla fine degli anni ‘60 da aziende tra cui Campbell, Hope & King e Gordon & MacPhail, che imbottigliavano e distribuivano per loro conto The Macallan, a questo whisky sono stati attribuiti alcuni codici del mondo del vino, tra cui l’indicazione dell’annata per qualsiasi versione dai 15 anni in su. Gli anni '90 hanno visto la comparsa di eleganti versioni di 25 e 30 anni, alcune delle quali sono state messe in commercio in bottiglie di cristallo: i Tudor Crystal Decanters, che annunciavano la nuova strada che The Macallan stava intraprendendo nel nuovo millennio. Così, nel 1999, è apparso un magnifico decanter in cristallo dalle forme voluttuose, impreziosito da una decorazione in rame, che accoglieva al suo interno una venerabile edizione vintage del 1949, invecchiata 50 anni.
