Domain: Gianni Brunelli

Although the Gianni Brunelli domaine is small, it boasts a big reputation. It straddles two different aspects of the appellations (clayey soils to the north, schist and limestone soils to the south) and therefore provides an insight into the Tuscan terroir with its two Brunellos. The domaine actually only produces two wines: its standard wine and a Riserva in exceptional years.

Gianni Brunelli is originally from Montalcino. He returned in 1987 to take over the running of his father’s property, “La Chiusa de Sotto”. The 5-hectare domain is located to the north-east of Montalcino where Sangiovese in planted on 2 hectares while olive trees grow in the rest of the domain for the production of olive oil. Their philosophy is to produce wines which are as natural as possible. The environment is something which is important to Gianna Brunelli, and so everything is done in order to have as small an impact as possible on the environment. The grapes are grown by hand and yields are limited to guarantee the quality of the juices.
