Intensity

A free and pure wine, born from the granite heights of Cornas, marked by remarkable tension, bright fruit and a fluid texture.

More info

The grapes used for this wine come from the northern Rhône Valley, from granite terraces in the heights of Cornas. Here the thin, acidic, clay-poor soils put a stress on the vines which is beneficial for the wine. These granitic soils bring a great deal of precision, minerality and energy to the wine. The altitude and northerly winds accentuate the natural freshness, giving the wine great tension and vibrant fruit. The grapes are harvested by hand, with meticulous sorting carried out directly in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place using natural yeasts. The winemaking is gentle, without aggressive extraction, to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The wine is aged for around 12 months, without fining or filtration. The colour of the wine is deep red with a purplish sheen. The nose is intense, pure and fresh, expressing aromas of black fruit, violets, white pepper and graphite, enhanced by a touch of resin and garrigue. On the palate, the impression is juicy, enlivened by very nice tension.

About the Producer Domaine du Coulet

The young winemaker Matthieu Barret works with great enthusiasm and energy. The 18 hectares family domaine is planted to Syrah, and other varieties, from which Matthieu makes Cornas and Côtes-du-Rhône. His respect for the environment has earned him biodynamic and organic certification since the early 2000s, a fairly common practice in this region. In the cave, Barret tries to intervene as little as possible to let the wine reflect its terroir and vintage. As Barret says himself “the will to reveal a wine's identity is at the basis of our work”. 2006 marked the release of a new type of wine. Since then, maturation has taken place, in part, in cement egg shaped vats in order to enhance the freshness and fruit present in the wine. This domaine offers three excellent interpretations of Cornas in its three cuvées Brise Cailloux, Les Terrasses du Serre and Billes Noires. The other wines are known for their finesse, freshness and elegance.
