Swartland Van Loggerenberg Wines High Hopes 2022

About the Producer Van Loggerenberg Wines

Founded in 2016 by Lukas van Loggerenberg, this low-key estate has established itself in less than a decade as one of the most exciting names on the South African wine scene. Located in Paarl, at the heart of the Western Cape, Van Loggerenberg Wines produces around 30,000 bottles per year, spread across a dozen highly sought-after vintages. Passionate about wines from the Loire Valley and their crystal-like purity, Lukas has opted for uncompromising viticulture with hand-picked harvests, vinification that involves minimal intervention, indigenous yeasts and ageing in older barrels; every care is taken to respect the expression of the grape variety and the personality of the terroirs.
Located on parcels in Swartland, Polkadraai Hills and even other cool, granitic areas of the Cape, Lukas works mainly with Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Cinsault and Syrah. His style, subtle and precise, often evokes Burgundy in its tautness, or the Loire Valley in its verticality, while offering a unique South African flair. Spontaneous fermentation and delicate ageing allows it to remain incredibly pleasant to drink – a common thread running through all his vintages.
Amongst the most emblematic wines of the estate, we find Kameraderie, a honest, saline Chenin Blanc; Breton, a vibrant Cabernet Franc, a nod to the Loire Valley origins of the grape variety; Graft, a high-altitude Syrah with an elegant profile, as well as Geronimo, a Cinsault bursting with fruit. These wines are produced in extremely limited quantities, often with less than 3,000 bottles per cuvée available, and fly off the shelves internationally as soon as they hit the market.
A member of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild since 2021, Lukas van Loggerenberg is today known by the greatest critics for his ability to raise South African wines to a level of excellence rarely achieved. With a refined, precise and highly digestible style, his wines captivate wine lovers around the world, looking for freshness and singularity in the southern hemisphere.
