A terroir-driven gastronomic rosé, balancing freshness, saline tension and complexity with grapefruit and red fruit notes.
More infoSituated on the left bank of the Rhône, at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, the Vacqueyras appellation is one of the oldest in the southern Rhône Valley. The cuvée Rosé de la Roche takes its name from one of the village’s oldest sectors, an area consisting of stony terraces on clay-limestone plateaux. Harvesting is done by hand at dawn to preserve the full freshness of the berries, with rigorous sorting carried out directly in the vineyard. Direct, slow and gentle pressing is carried out without destalking, allowing only the finest juices to be extracted. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at low temperature using only native yeasts. The wine is then aged for several months on fine lees, with regular stirring of the lees.
The wine displays a delicate pale pink hue with salmon highlights. The refined and complex nose offers aromas of grapefruit, redcurrant, white peach and garrigue. The palate opens with a lively, saline attack, followed by a fleshy mid-palate carried by elegant tension.
About the Producer Roucas Toumba
Domaine Roucas Toumba takes its name from the old Provençal for "fallen rock" or "rocher tombé", which is what this area was known as in the 19th century. The choice reflects Eric Bouletin's attachment to his roots; his surname can be traced back to 1580 in this village. Eric used to send his grapes to the cooperative in Vacqueyras but in 2006, he decided to make his own wine. Today, he toils in the 4-hectare estate alongside his wife Junko, a Japanese sommelier.
The majority of the vineyard is planted with 80-year-old Grenache vines, protected from the Mistral by the surrounding cypress, almond and olive trees. He also grows Syrah and Mourvèdre, and some white grape varieties that are introduced in very low quantities to refine the wines. The estate holds organic certification and the vineyard is cultivated with utmost respect for the land, meaning no herbicides or chemical fertilisers. The wines are vinified in wooden barrels and are deep, mineral and pure.
