Morgon Athanor Jean Foillard 2015
The wine
A unique and rare cuvée, Athanor is the fruit of extremely attentive viticulture and natural vinification. It was crafted in 2015 instead of the famous 3.14 cuvée which isn't produced every year. Its depth and intensity are delightful, as is its capacity for aging.
About the Producer Jean Foillard
Domaine Jean Foillard is, undeniably, one of the most famous producers in Beaujolais. The estate has about 20 hectares of vines, mainly in the Morgon and Fleurie appellations. Jean Foillard, who took over the property in 1981, was inspired by Marcel Lapierre to manage his vines in a style that is as close to organic as possible (most of the hectares are, in fact, certified organic). Foillard's techniques aim to preserve as much fruit as possible without the use of sulphur. His meticulous and delicate vinifications result in wines with a silky mouth feel.
His wines stand out for their intensity of fruit, their freshness as well as for their good balance of structure and delicacy. These are wines that can be enjoyed now or in a few years and are a gold standard for Beaujolais.
The future of the estate is in good hands. Jean has passed on all his knowledge to his son Alex, who also owns some vines that he operates under his own name in Brouilly and Côte-de-Brouilly. Foillard is a promising name that continues to contribute to the region's dynamism.
