Vacqueyras Cuvée de Lopy Le Sang des Cailloux 2007

The wine

Cuvée de Lopy is a blend of mainly Grenache grapes supplemented with Syrah. Both are grown in limestone-clay soil with pudding stones, and harvested by hand. This wine is organically and biodynamically certified, and is produced using 100% destemming and a traditional fermentation in concrete vats with daily pump-overs. The wine is matured for 12 months in 450-litre casks. With its deep ruby colour, it exudes notes of ripe, spicy fruit, and the palate opens into aromas of leather and bitter cocoa. Concentrated and dense, it ends with a long, deep finish. This wine should be opened one hour before serving. Be aware: this wine, made from the domain's oldest vines, is produced in small quantities.

Domaine du Sang des Cailloux was created in 1975 and bought by Serge Férigoule in 1990. As a sustainable winegrower, Serge decided to prohibit the use of chemical herbicides and artificial products. In 2003, his son Frédéric joined him to assist with cultivating the domain's 17-hectare vineyard on a plateau facing the breathtaking Dentelles de Montmirail in the Vacqueyras appellation. Together, they decided to apply firstly for organic certification and then biodynamic. The reddish brown, clay-limestone and pebble terroir is primarily cultivated for red wine. For some years though Serge and Frédéric have also been trying their hand at white wine.
