The wine
Vall Lach, the vineyard’s top-of-the-range wine, has been crafted with lengthy ageing in mind. It is produced with grapes from the property’s oldest vines (yields are low) and matured in new French oak for 17 months. To begin with, the nose is quite closed but in time it opens up to reveal fruity (dark fruits, plum, cherry), mineral, empyreumatic and animal notes. The palate is fruity, flavoursome and generous, with a long finish. This is a particularly complex and deep wine that combines both power and delicacy. To enjoy it at its best it needs a number of years in the cellar and should be transferred to a carafe before drinking.
About the Producer Bodegas Vall Llach
Lluis Lach and Enric Costa established this domaine comprising the ancient Priorat vineyard spanning the area between Porrera and Torroja in the early 1990s. Grenache and Carignan are grown in tiny parcels located on steep hillsides known as “trossos”. The Estate has 49 hectares with a soil containing llicorella, a regional slate. The proximity of the sea and the height above sea level counterbalance the hot climate. Winters are cold and nights are cool. Grapes are harvested by hand, vinification is carried out by parcel, and only indigenous yeasts are used during ageing in French oak barrels.
