Port Morant 13 years Liquid Gold Caribbean Reserve Single Cask - bottled 2001
The wine
A Port Mourant 13 Year Old bottled in Scotland in 2001 for Douglas Laing’’s Liquid Gold range and imported to Italy by Rinaldi. Given the age and bottling year, it seems likely this rum was distilled at Uitvlugt in the Port Mourant wooden double still housed there at the time. Douglas Laing was founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing, primarily as a blending company but also as an independent bottler, an activity which grew over the years. When Fred Douglas Laing died in 1982, his two sons Fred and Stewart took over the business. Stewart left in 2013 to set up Hunter Laing. Douglas Laing is today managed by Fred Laing and his daughter Cara.
About the Producer Port Mourant
The Port Mourant distillery was built in 1732 and closed in 1955. Its double pot still built from Guyanese wood—Chlorocardium Rodiei (Greenheart), generally used for shipbuilding due to its good water resistance, which offers properties similar to copper for purifying sulphur compounds—was moved to Albion when Port Mourant closed, then Uitvlugt, and finally Diamond when Uitvlugt closed in 1999. It is known for producing a heavy, oily rum, bringing lots of relief to the famous navy rums so dear to the Royal Navy.
