Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pierre Naigeon (Domaine) 2011
The wine
This Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is produced from the family's vines which Pierre Naigeon's grandfather replanted in 1938. Their clay-limestone soil benefits from extensive iron deposits in the subsoil which makes these wines powerful. Dark in colour, this is a well-structured wine with complex aromas encompassing fruit, pepper and licorice too. A truly wonderful wine which should be left to age for 5 to 15 years.
About the Producer Pierre Naigeon
In Gevrey-Chambertin, the Naigeons are known above all as a large trading family. Pierre Naigeon trained at the family school, alongside his father and his trading house, Naigeon-Chauveau. But after buying it, he found himself in 1996 with a single hectare and everything to build. He moved quickly towards a biodynamic approach and considered his own identity, more attached to the purity of the fruit than his father was. Today the domaine has extended to 11 hectares, and Pierre Naigeon tirelessly pursues the best expression of his old vines (over 50 years old) and the various micro-climates on which they flourish. To sublimate the fruit, he carries out severe sorting during the harvest and the gentle extraction in the cellar means he can refine the tannins. As a result: Pierre Naigeon’s wines are silky, even finer than those produced by the previous generation.
