Jura is one of France’s smallest winegrowing regions with around 2,000 hectares of vineyards – Bordeaux, in comparison, has 110,000 – but it is a historic wine region, dating back to Gallic times. For a long time, Jura’s wines were essentially reserved for local consumption, but over the last fifteen years or so, their popularity has been on the rise.

With six AOCs (Arbois, Château-Châlon, L’Etoile, Côtes-du-Jura, Crémant du Jura and Macvin du Jura) and one PGI (IGP Coteaux-de-l’Ain Revermont), some characterful local grape varieties (Savagnin, Poulsard and Trousseau), as well as other better-known varieties used in blends (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) and fantastic terroirs, Jura’s wines are now among the most sought-after in the world. Overnoy, Ganevat, Domaine des Miroirs and Domaine des Murmures are names that wine connoisseurs the world over dream about, especially those who enjoy natural wines. Alongside these icons, many other extremely talented producers are also drawing the attention of wine enthusiasts, from new to more historic estates and even some that are no longer in existence, like Bruyère-Houillon, Labet, Tissot, Jean Macle, M. Perron, Jacques Puffeney, Jean-Marc Brignot, Allante Boulanger, Morgane Turlier, Maison Glandien, Nicolas Jacob, Maison Maenad, Thomas Poppy, Alexandre Plassat, Domaine des Cavarodes, Domaine Saint-Pierre, and Rousset Martin. Unfortunately, with demand far outstripping supply at many of the region’s estates, wines are becoming increasingly hard to find. However, Jura is a dynamic wine region and new talent is regularly emerging.
