Information
Yvon Métras took over the family estate near Villié-Morgon in 1988. A firm follower of Marcel Lapierre and Jules Chauvet, he is also an advocate of natural wines. His five-hectare vineyard, some of which is situated on steep slopes that are difficult to work on, is entirely organic and his vinifications are always as natural as possible (natural yeasts, and very little to no sulphur). They stay true to tradition with semi-carbonic maceration and a gentle pressing using an old-fashioned press that avoids excessive tannin extraction. Yvon Métras has passed on his passion to his son Jules, who crafts wines in a similar spirit, notably La Montagne from Chiroubles.
This estate shines as a beacon in Beaujolais, renowned for the authentic, fruit forward wines Métras produces. Nowadays, the soaring demand for these wines far outweighs the limited supply. His range of Gamay-driven wines, including Fleurie Le Printemps, Fleurie Vieilles Vignes and Moulin-à-Vent, continues to enjoy widespread acclaim, alongside his very popular Beaujolais second release.
Yvon Métras has produced a superb Gamay grown in silty sands using organic methods. The freshness of its aromas, and its indulgence on the palate, make this a perfect wine for an apéritif. However, its solidity and structured body mean it can be paired with more substantial dishes too, or kept for a few years.
