Information
Stéphane Bernaudeau, who works for Domaine Mark Angeli, also owns just over 2 hectares of vines in Anjou in the Martigné-Briand district. This small-scale concern has been very successful and it is hard to get hold of bottles of its Chenin cuvées as their quality is so high. These wines have a distinctive depth, energy and minerality. We can highly recommend wines from this outstanding producer.
The vineyard lies on a schist bedrock typical of the Anjou Noir region. These poor, well-drained, ancient soils force the vines to dig their roots deep, contributing to aromatic concentration in the grapes and to a razor-sharp minerality in the wine. The schist’s natural acidity underlines the verticality of the Chenin grape variety. The vines, several decades old, are tended without weedkillers or chemical inputs. Harvesting is by hand, followed by gentle, slow pressing in the winery. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in seasoned barriques with native yeasts. The wine is then aged on lees for twelve months and bottled without fining or filtration.
The pale yellow hue is graced with golden glints. The expressive nose reveals notes of lemon, green apple, fresh quince and acacia blossom. The attack is lively and crisp, leading to a long, mouthwatering, fruit-driven finish.
