Why choose this wine?
Beautiful with grilled meat, this wine carries delicate notes of kirsch and blackcurrant.
More infoThis pure Carignan is made from sixty-year-old vines that grow in a terroir of clay-rich and sandy alluvium. It is a single-parcel cuvée that comes from the lieu-dit ‘Les Combariolles’ in Jonquières.
Clos de la Barthassade works organically, with some of their methods resembling biodynamics. The vines undergo ‘gobelet’ pruning. Once harvested, the grapes are vinified traditionally with total destemming. The wine is then matured for 24 months in casks and concrete eggs.
In the glass, this is a wine gives off notes of kirsch and blackcurrant. Oaky aromas are conferred from the ageing process. It is round on the palate with a fresh and balanced finish.
We recommend uncorking this bottle at around 16°C and serving it with a nice, meaty dish. A few years in the cellar will allow it to better express itself; around 5 to 10 years will do.
About the Producer Le Clos de la Barthassade
★ Partner ProducerThese two thirty-somethings arrived in Languedoc in 2013 after having studied in Burgundy, at Domaine de la Pousse d'Or and Sylvain Pataille, and Provence, at Domaine de Trévallon. They settled in les Terrasses du Larzac, where they strive to make fine wines that are both fresh and moorish.
Clos de la Barthassade stretches over 14 hectares and the vines are separated into blocks. Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, Cinsault, old Carignan Noir, Chenin Blanc and even Chardonnay all grow here. To amplify the unique soils found on the property, Hélène and Guillaume follow organic practices. Vinification is as natural as possible and they only use natural yeasts and no added sulphur to make the wine. Extraction is gentle, and the reds are ideally vinified using whole bunches. The white wines are vinified ‘in the Burgundian style’.
The results speaks for themselves! The wines display unrivalled balance and freshness, raising the standard of the entire appellation. Since their first vintage in 2014, a significant number of wines lovers have fallen in love with their unique wines.
