A powerful, mineral Riesling Grand Cru combining freshness, complexity and impressive length. An Alsatian Grand Cru expressing the full elegance of the Sommerberg terroir.
More infoThe Sommerberg Grand Cru, located on the slopes of the Vosges mountains, benefits from a semi-continental climate that allows slow grape ripening and contributes considerable complexity to the wines. The Sommerberg terroir is defined by marl-limestone and granitic soils. The vines, planted between 350 and 400 metres above sea level, enjoy a south-south-east-facing exposure, favouring optimal ripening and aromatic concentration. Manual harvests ensure a rigorous selection of the healthiest, ripest bunches. Vinification follows a traditional approach, with spontaneous fermentation driven by native yeasts. The wine is then aged for several months on fine lees in large oak foudres (large tuns).
In the glass, the wine shows a bright pale yellow hue with green highlights. The nose is complex, revealing aromas of citrus, green apple and white flowers, underpinned by a mineral flinty edge. On the palate, a lively, incisive attack leads into a finely balanced structure with bright acidity and marked tension. Fresh fruit flavours combine with clean and elegant minerality, carrying through to a long, refined finish with a saline edge.
About the Producer Zind-Humbrecht
Zind Humbrecht was created in 1959 as a result of the merger of the wine producing operations of the Humbrecht family in Gueberschwihr and the Zind family in Wintzenheim. The Humbrechts are a very old wine-making family, who have been passing their skills from one generation to the next since the Thirty Years War (1620). The property has 42 hectares across 6 grand crus and other vineyards and is managed according to biodynamic principles. Zind Humbrecht has long been established as one of Alsace's most reputable producers. Léonard Humbrecht has placed quality over quantity, developing superb terroirs that have been neglected because they are too difficult to work, such as Rangen in Thann. Today, Olivier Humbrecht - the first French Master of Wine - and his father are only interested in exceptional terroirs; their insistence on quality, combined with virtuoso technical ability, enable them to produce exceptionally dense, complex wines that are always respectful of the characteristics of the grape varieties and the terroir. Their wines can be classed among the best white wines in the world.
