Côte-Rôtie Lieu-dit Cognet Stéphane Ogier 2018
The wine
Granted AOC status in 1940, the Côte-Rôtie appellation is renowned for its vertiginous slopes overlooking the Rhône, where the vines are still cultivated by hand on steep terraces under demanding conditions. The Cognet locality situated in the northern part of the appellation enjoys a south-east-facing aspect. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness, carefully sorted, then transferred to the vats with a proportion of whole bunches to preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. Fermentation is carried out with gentle punch-downs, allowing the finest tannins to be extracted gradually. The wine is then aged for 24 months in French oak casks.
In the glass, the wine shows an intense ruby hue with purplish glints. The refined, complex nose reveals aromas of ripe black fruit, violet, black olive, white pepper, fine leather and smoke. Broad and structured on the first sip, the palate is supported by refined tannins and remarkable freshness.
About the Producer Stéphane Ogier
★ Partner ProducerAs this estate on the hillsides of Ampuis has been in the family for seven generations, it was perfectly natural for Stéphane Ogier to take over from his father Michel in 1997. Having learned his craft in Burgundy, he has decided to produce single-plot wines to achieve the best expression of each terroir. He also strives constantly for elegance and finesse.
Today, the vines are planted on 45 hectares of granite and shale soil (9 hectares are reserved for white vines). Viticulture is conducted according to sustainable principles. Two distinct terroirs define the estate’s identity: the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde, both shaped by a relatively cool climate. Since 2015, the estate operates in an ultramodern winery, equipped with over 600 barriques, ensuring precision in both vinification and ageing. Today, Stéphane Ogier’s wines clearly belong among the elite, thanks to his unwavering pursuit of excellence driven by passion, ambition, talent, and creativity.
