The wine
This red Chassagne-Montrachet comes from a parcel of just 1.6 hectares. The Pinot Noir vines are around 50 years old and are grown sustainably in clay and chalk soil. After being matured for 14 to 18 months in oak barrels (around 30% new wood), the wine has a potential ageing time of 10 years. It has a perfectly evolved aromatic bouquet of red and black fruits, violet, gentle spices and leather, and a concentrated and supple mouthfeel.
Owned since 1940 by the Cournut family, Château de la Maltroye, located in Chassagne-Montrachet, has 13 hectares of vineyards, 70% of which are premier cru and two hectares are in Santenay. In the cellar, the whites are fermented in barrels with lees stirring, their élevage lasting 12 months. The reds undergo cold pre-fermentation and their barrel élevage lasts between 14 and 18 months. The domaine is managed by Jean-Pierre Cornut, a former aeronautical engineer. The wines are high-quality, fresh and fruity, with great potential.
