Port Mourant 15 years 1997 Velier Small Batch UPM Cask n°1-2-3-4 Limited Edition 1094 Bottles Very Old Demerara Rum

The wine

A Port Mourant distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2012 after 15 years of maturation in a tropical climate. Selected by the Genoese independent bottler Velier in the period when Luca Gargano had access to the cellars of Demerara Distillers Limited thanks to his friendship with Yesu Persaud. These selections, and bottles such as this Uitvlugt in particular, played a key role in building Velier's renown, alongside its incredible Caroni bottlings. Velier no longer has access to DDL's stocks and these rums are now some of the most sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts due to the unique flavours and concentration offered by their tropical ageing. This is part of a limited edition of 1,094 bottles, drawn from four casks with an angel's share as high as 73%. Port Mourant is the oldest wooden pot still still in operation.

About the Producer Port Mourant

The Port Mourant distillery was built in 1732 and closed in 1955. Its double pot still built from Guyanese wood—Chlorocardium Rodiei (Greenheart), generally used for shipbuilding due to its good water resistance, which offers properties similar to copper for purifying sulphur compounds—was moved to Albion when Port Mourant closed, then Uitvlugt, and finally Diamond when Uitvlugt closed in 1999. It is known for producing a heavy, oily rum, bringing lots of relief to the famous navy rums so dear to the Royal Navy.
