Roussillon | 2019 vintage
The 2019 Roussillon vintage surprised many as the extreme weather experienced by the vines contradicts the completely balanced wines containing silky tannins. A mild, dry winter was followed by a particularly cold spring for the region which remained until the first few days of June. Very quickly, it went from one extreme to the other as there was a heatwave by mid-June, which gave the vines a temperature shock. The rest of the summer was as hot as any other year and small amounts of welcome rain fell which stopped ripening from being blocked.
The coolness of spring delayed the harvests which could only start after beneficial rainfall in mid-September. But ripening occurred perfectly, and the winemakers could harvest their beautiful, healthy grapes. The red wines are aromatic, balanced by a beautiful freshness with plenty of concentrated flavours. They are definitely wines for keeping. The whites are equally good, maybe a little behind the reds because they suffered more from the lack of rain.
