vosne-romanée

The name Vosne-Romanée carries its share of legends, incredible stories and great names in wine. This Burgundy appellation, recognised as an AOC in 1936, runs from the village of Vosne-Romanée to Flagey-Echézeaux. The vineyards stretch out on either side of the Combe de Concoeur on clay and limestone slopes, at an altitude ranging from 235 to 350 metres. It boasts an extraordinary concentration of grand crus, including Romanée-Conti, Romanée Saint-Vivant, La Romanée, La Tâche, La Grande Rue, Richebourg, Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux. The appellation also has its fair share of premier crus, such as Aux Brulées, Cros Parantoux (Henri Jayer’s historic cru) and Les Chaumes. Gaston Roupnel referred to Vosne-Romanée as “the pearl in Burgundy’s crown” and the nickname is well-deserved.

This “pearl” has 226 hectares of vines, divided between producers like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Méo-Camuzet, Prieuré Roch and Bizot, as well as David Duband, Albert Bichot, Louis Latour and Joseph Drouhin, who produce around 5,500 hectolitres of wine each year. And what wines! They are exclusively red and range from brilliant ruby to dark purple in colour. They exude elegant aromas of red and black fruits and spices, developing notes of leather and fur with age, and have velvety tannins on the palate. The appellation is planted exclusively with Pinot Noir. It gives outstanding results on Vosne-Romanée’s sunny slopes, producing great wines that are made to age.
