Nuits-Saint-Georges

The Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation lies at the very heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits wine region. The village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, after which the region is named, has always played a part in the recognition and promotion of Côte de Nuits wines. The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin (literally “Fraternity of the Knights of the Wine-Tasting Cup”) was founded here in 1934. As in Beaune, a prestigious charity wine sale takes place here every year, the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges auction (organised by iDealwine in 2025).

The production area of the AOC covers 304 hectares, 289 of which are devoted entirely to Pinot Noir. Nuits-Saint-Georges has the largest number of premier crus in the Côte de Nuits as 41 climats or plots are classified as premier crus. Not far to the north is the AOC of Vosne-Romanée, and the famous Clos de Vougeot estate. The appellation is renowned for producing wines with a deep purple or mauve colour and notes of cherry and blackcurrant, and even truffle and game once the wines reach maturity. On the palate, the wines are full-bodied and powerful, with blackcurrant and animal aromas. The soils of Nuits-Saint-Georges are very diverse, but in the north they are composed mainly of silt and gravel that have slipped down the slopes of the Côte. In the southern part, the soils feature silt derived from marl and limestone rocks. It is in the south of Nuits-Saint-Geogres that the most premier cru plots can be found, as the soil at the top of the hillside here is shallow.

Many estates produce splendid wines from the terroirs of Nuits-Saint-Georges, including Thibault Liger-Belair, David Duband, Leroy, Meo-Camuzet, La Vougeraie, Domaine de l’Arlot, Maison Romane and Jean-Marc Millot.
