Pauillac
The Pauillac AOC has been recognised as such since 1936. Surrounded by Saint-Julien to the south and Saint-Estèphe to the north, it covers approximately 1,200 hectares and is home to 38 châteaux, including 18 of the 1855 Grands Crus Classés.
The soils are gravelly, with marl and limestone subsoils, and the grape varieties grown are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère and Petit Verdot.
Pauillac wines are renowned for being pure, concentrated and deep wines, structured by plentiful tannins. All of this makes them excellent cellar wines.
Among the most renowned estates in Pauillac are the premier cru châteaux of Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild, and Latour, and other properties such as Pichon-Comtesse-de-Lalande, Pichon-Baron, Duhart-Milon and Lynch-Bages.
